St. Peter's Basilica & the Vatican

The spiritual heart of our trip — we attend Mass at St. Peter's with Father Ben, then tour the Vatican Museums with guide Ala. Here's everything to know before we go.

⛪ What is St. Peter's Basilica?

St. Peter's Basilica is the largest Christian church in the world and one of the holiest places on Earth. It is built over the tomb of Saint Peter — one of Jesus's closest disciples and the first Pope. The current basilica was begun in 1506 and took 120 years to complete, with Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bernini all contributing to its design.

📐 The Incredible Numbers

448 ft
Height of Michelangelo's dome — tallest dome in the world
714 ft
Length of the basilica — longer than 2 football fields
60,000
People fit inside at once
1506
Year construction began — Pope Julius II

🎨 What to Look For Inside

Michelangelo's Pietà (1499) — a breathtaking marble sculpture of Mary holding Jesus, carved when Michelangelo was only 24 years old.

Bernini's Bronze Canopy (Baldachin) — a massive 95-foot bronze canopy over the main altar, built using bronze taken from the Pantheon's roof.

The Dome — look straight up at the center. The light pouring through is otherworldly.

🕊️ Our Mass with Father Ben

We have the extraordinary privilege of attending Mass at St. Peter's on June 10 at 8:15 AM with Father Ben. Arriving early is essential — plan to be seated by 8:00 AM. Dress respectfully: shoulders and knees covered, no shorts. Mass at St. Peter's is an experience very few people have — it is something the Edwards family will carry forever.

🏛️ Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel

Our Vatican Museums tour with guide Ala begins at 7:30 AM on June 11. The museums hold one of the greatest art collections in the world — built by the Popes over 500 years. Highlights include:

Gallery of Maps — enormous painted maps of all of Italy (Rose will love this!)
Raphael's Rooms — School of Athens and other masterpieces
Egyptian Museum — real mummies! (George's favorite)
Sistine Chapel — Michelangelo's ceiling. No photos allowed. Total silence required.

📋 Important Rules for Entry

Bring passports — required for Vatican Museums
✓ Shoulders covered (no tank tops)
✓ Knees covered (no shorts or short skirts)
✓ Men remove hats inside the Basilica
✓ No large bags or backpacks in the museums
✓ Absolute silence in the Sistine Chapel
✓ No photography in the Sistine Chapel
✓ St. Peter's Basilica is free to enter
✓ Arrive early — crowds are intense by 9 AM

💡 Fun Vatican Facts for Daniel, Henry, Rose & George

  • Vatican City is the smallest country in the world — only about the size of a large golf course (110 acres)!
  • About 800 people actually live there permanently and they have their own passport, post office, and radio station
  • The Swiss Guard has protected the Pope since 1506 — they wear distinctive striped uniforms designed by Michelangelo
  • The Vatican has its own fire department, pharmacy, supermarket, and even a football (soccer) team
  • St. Peter's tomb is actually buried 20 feet below the main altar — archaeologists confirmed it in 1950
  • Michelangelo was 33 when he started the Sistine Chapel ceiling and 37 when he finished — not much older than Daniel!
  • You can climb 551 steps to the top of the dome for a 360° view of all of Rome

Amazing Facts About Italy

Tap any card to reveal the answer! See who can remember the most by the end of the trip — Edwards Family Challenge!

🏛️
How old is the Colosseum?
Completed in 80 AD — almost 2,000 years ago! Built using 100,000 workers, it hosted gladiator fights, animal hunts, and even mock sea battles when they flooded the floor. George can think about what it would have been like to sit in the crowd!
Tap to reveal! 👆
🎨
How long did it take Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling?
4 years (1508–1512), mostly lying on his back on scaffolding. He painted it largely alone and had no experience with fresco before starting — he was primarily a sculptor! The ceiling has 300 figures and covers 5,000 square feet. Rose would run out of art supplies in the first week!
Tap to reveal! 👆
🍕
Where was pizza invented?
Naples, Italy, in 1889! A local pizzaiolo made a special pie for Queen Margherita with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil — the colors of the Italian flag. That's why it's called "Pizza Margherita." Henry and George can order it by name at any Italian restaurant!
Tap to reveal! 👆
🪙
How much money is thrown into the Trevi Fountain each year?
About 1.5 million euros (~$1.6 million)! The coins are collected regularly and donated to a charity that feeds hungry people in Rome. So when the Edwards family tosses coins in, they're actually helping someone! The legend says toss with your right hand over your left shoulder to guarantee a return to Rome.
Tap to reveal! 👆
How tiny is Vatican City?
Just 110 acres — roughly the size of a golf course! It's the world's smallest country. It has its own government, passport, currency, post office, radio station, and even a football (soccer) team. About 800 people live there permanently. Daniel could walk around the entire country in about 40 minutes!
Tap to reveal! 👆
🐱
Why are there thousands of cats living in Rome?
Rome has an estimated 300,000 feral cats! They are protected by law as part of the city's heritage. The most famous colony lives in the Largo di Torre Argentina ruins — the very spot where Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC. The cats are cared for by volunteers. Rose will definitely want to find them!
Tap to reveal! 👆
🍦
What makes Italian gelato different from American ice cream?
Gelato has less fat (more milk, less cream), less air whipped in, and is served slightly warmer — making it denser, silkier, and more intensely flavored. There's a rule in the Edwards family: at least one gelato per day while in Italy. Henry is in charge of finding the best gelateria in each city!
Tap to reveal! 👆
🌿
Who was St. Francis of Assisi?
Born in 1181 to a wealthy merchant family, Francis gave up all his wealth to serve the poor and care for nature. He preached to birds, tamed a dangerous wolf, and believed every living creature deserves love and respect. He founded the Franciscan monks. Made a saint just 2 years after his death in 1226. George will love learning about him in Assisi!
Tap to reveal! 👆
📐
Did the Leaning Tower of Pisa always lean?
It started leaning during construction in 1173 because the soil on one side was too soft! It took 199 years to finish building because it kept tilting. Engineers in the 1990s straightened it slightly so it won't fall. It now leans about 4 degrees from vertical. Daniel can calculate the exact lean in feet from the top!
Tap to reveal! 👆
🦁
What animals were in the Colosseum?
Hundreds of exotic animals from across the Roman Empire — lions, tigers, elephants, hippos, rhinos, giraffes, ostriches, and bears! There were underground tunnels and trapdoors that could lift animals directly up through the floor of the arena. About 1 million animals and 400,000 people died there over its history. George's jaw will drop when he sees the underground tunnels!
Tap to reveal! 👆
🗼
Why did medieval families build tall towers in San Gimignano?
To show off! In the 1200s and 1300s, rich families competed to build the tallest tower as a display of power and wealth. At its peak, San Gimignano had 72 towers. Only 14 survive today. When two families feuded, they would sometimes build side-by-side towers and throw rocks at each other from the tops! Henry and George can have their own tower competition.
Tap to reveal! 👆
🏺
Who were the Etruscans?
The Etruscans were a mysterious civilization that ruled central Italy before the Romans — from about 700 BC to 300 BC. They built cities like Volterra and Cortona. The Romans conquered them and absorbed their culture, art, and even some of their alphabet! The Etruscan Museum in Volterra has 600 ancient artifacts. Henry and Daniel will find this fascinating.
